Shade Trees

Trees

Using Native trees that have lived in this environment for ages will help ensure a thriving and healthy ecosystem. Some favorites recommended by the LSU Ag Center include Cypress, Live Oak, Hickory, Ash, Southern Magnolia and Sycamore. Shade trees can grow quite large, between 25’ to 50’ tall, so you’ll want to avoid planting the trees too close to the house (min. 20’), away from overhead power lines, away from ground transformers, avoid blocking views, and shading out sun loving plants. If placed correctly these trees can add 13% – 21% to the real estate value of your property, cool your house down and even help protect it during a storm event. On-going maintenance of large trees is very important, and you should try to budget an annual amount for pruning and termite treatments to make sure they stay healthy.
