Landscape Water Meter
A landscape water meter allows the homeowner to only pay for water service, thereby avoiding sewer charges. The cost to install a meter varies depending on the size of the connection and the location of the meter, but one can expect to pay a minimum of $1800.
To obtain a landscape water meter estimate, a request must be made in person or in writing to the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans. Be prepared to supply the following information:
- size of connection (typically 2”-4”, may depend on existing piping on site)
- desired location of meter (distance from sidewalk and sides of lot)
- contact information of person making the request (name, phone number, and address)
- address of Lot Next Door property

After verifying that the lot will be used only for landscape purposes, the Sewerage and Water Board will prepare an estimate with two options:
- Work completed by Sewerage and Water Board, signed off by a master plumber.
- Work completed by an independent contractor, verified by Sewerage and Water Board, and signed off by a master plumber.
In either case, a master plumber must install a backflow preventer on the new water line. The installation of a landscape water meter is a large upfront cost, but it can pay off over a number of years with long-term savings, particularly for heavy water users.
