Classifying Your Tree

The amount of Growing Home credit that you can receive for a new tree depends on its size and species. Below we describe the types of trees that we give credit for and list examples of each kind.

Fruit trees: 3 gallon minimum container size
($50 credit)
-orange, lemon, satsuma, pear, fig, etc.

Native Ornamental trees: 7-10 gallon minimum container size
($110 credit)
-redbud, silverbell, mixed plum, mayhaw, serviceberry, holly, fringe tree, shining sumac, etc.

Non-Native Ornamental trees: 7-10 gallon minimum container size
($100 credit)
-crape myrtle, golden raintree, saucer magnolia (tulip tree), bradford pear, foxtail palm, etc.

Native Shade trees: 15 gallon minimum container size or 2” minimum caliper
($275 credit)
-water oak, pecan, sycamore, blackgum, red maple, cypress, etc.

Non-Native Shade trees: 15 gallon minimum container size or 2” minimum caliper
($250 credit)
-chinese elm, queen palm, japanese zelkova, weeping willow, etc.

Small Live Oak: 10 gallon minimum container size
($275 credit)

Large Live Oak: 15 gallon minimum container size or 2” minimum caliper
($330 credit)

note: the caliper of a tree is the diameter of the trunk measured at chest height.
